The first flight I remember was when I was 10 years old, to take me on a family holiday to Majorca. I didn't enjoy this new experience of flying and having had ear problems as a child I felt a lot of pain on take off and landing. Overall I did not enjoy my first flight. Over the years as I took more and more flights to various destinations my fear of flying increased. Flying through turbulence and an electrical storm only added to my reasons to be afraid. I also found that flying at a time when my stress levels were increased anyway, further escalated this fear into a state of near panic.
Therefore when I decided to fly alone to Sarajevo in Bosnia last year I wasn't pleased that not only would I have to take two flights each way (including two take-offs and two landings - the worst part!) but the second plane was just a small propeller plane!
The weeks leading up to my trip were extremely hectic and busy so I failed to make time to use EFT on my fear of flying. However I did still use EFT to help me enjoy my flight, and I'd like to share with you how I did this so that you too can apply this to your fear.
Whilst waiting by the gate to board our plane (the first and the larger of the two - a jumbo jet) I found I was looking at the plane we were about to fly on and feeling anxiety levels rise. So I positioned myself right next to the window with my back to the other passengers and went through several EFT rounds of tapping* while looking directly at the plane. I didn't use any complicated set up or reminder phrases because my fear was right there where I wanted it. I simply tapped on each on the EFT points while looking at the plane, and occasionally reminding myself how scared I was by saying "feeling scared", "feeling anxious" or something similar.
After a few minutes of tapping I was called to board the plane which I did calmly and in control. I went on to enjoy two flights on my way to Bosnia that were at times turbulent, but did not make me anxious in any way. I even enjoyed the propeller plane!
This state of calm stayed with me on the return flights as well, and since then I have enjoyed and - dare I say it - looked forward to a flight to Edinburgh! I also noticed that since the tapping the ear pain on landing (which had stayed with me since I was a child) was not anywhere near as intense, which was an added benefit that I wasn't expecting.
As I look forward to another flight to Bosnia I would like to share what one of my clients had to say about her experience of using EFT to overcome her fear of flying. Originally from New Zealand she contacted me for help when faced with a long haul flight back home to visit her family.
"It sounds silly to say I was afraid of flying, when you consider I had to come from New Zealand to get to the UK to live in the first place, but I really was terrified. My heart would start to pound, I would break out in a sweat and I was convinced I was about to die every time I got onto an aeroplane. Using EFT has enabled me to stay a lot calmer when travelling by air which has made it a much more pleasant experience. And I no longer have the nightmares I used to have weeks before I was due to fly anywhere. If anyone is finding a fear of flying is limiting their ability to travel or enjoy their holidays then I'd recommend they try EFT."
